Cholera: Symptoms, Prevention and Cure

Cholera outbreaks continue to threaten public health. According to the WHO report around 21,000 to 143,000 death occur globally due cholera every year. It is an acute diarrhoeal disease that can lead to rapid dehydration and death if left untreated.

What causes Cholera?

Cholera is caused by bacterium Vibrio cholerae. This bacterium is usually found in food and water that has been contaminated by faeces of an infected person.

When a person consumes the contaminated food or water, the bacteria release the toxin in the intestine to produce the large amount of fluids resulting in profuse diarrhoea and vomiting. The loss of fluids is so rapid that the patient can quickly become severely dehydrated and may die within a few hours if not properly treated.


Symptoms of Cholera

Symptoms of cholera can be shown within couple of the hour after the infection or it may take up to 4-5 days. Cholera infections are often mild without symptoms but sometimes it be can be fatal.

The symptoms include:

• Watery diarrhoea
• Vomiting
• Headache
• Nausea
• Muscle cramps
• Low blood pressure
• Rapid heart
• Sunken eyes
• Loss of skin elasticity

Treatment of Cholera

Treatment of cholera should be done immediately as the complete dehydration due to cholera can lead to death within hour. Cholera can be treated by replacing the fluids and salts that lost through diarrhoea and vomiting. If there would be chances of severe dehydration then these fluids need to replace intravenously. Antibiotics & zinc supplements are also given in treating the cholera diseases.

The CDC (Centres for diseases control and prevention) recommends rehydration with ORS (oral rehydration salts) fluids as the primary treatment for cholera.

Prevention from Cholera

• Avoid consumption of under cooked food and sea food.
• Wash hands with soap and clean water,
