Hepatitis refers to an inflammation of the liver. It is commonly caused due to viral infection, but there are other possible causes of hepatitis too. Hepatitis can even lead to the development of fibrosis (scarring) and liver cancer, which makes it one of the most dangerous water-borne diseases. Hepatitis virus is the most common cause of this disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are 4.4 million Americans currently living and are affected with chronic hepatitis and many more people don’t even know that they have it.
There are 5 main types of hepatitis viruses commonly known as A, B, C, D and E. Hepatitis type B and C lead to severe chronic diseases in millions of people. They together are the most common cause of the harmful and dangerous liver cirrhosis and cancer. Out of these 5 main types of Hepatitis, type A and E are caused due to contaminated food and water.
Types of Hepatitis
Scientists identified 5 types of Hepatitis, which are acknowledged by the letters A, B, C, D and E. However, all of them are one of the major cause of liver diseases. But all of them does not appear to be the cause of deadly water-borne diseases. Hepatitis A and E are the only types of hepatitis that are caused by the consumption of contaminated water and food.
Hepatitis A Virus (HAV)
HAV or Hepatitis A virus is most often transmitted through the ingestion of contaminated water or food. Infections are mild in several cases, with most of the people making a full retrieval and remaining immune from further Hepatitis A infections. However, HAV infections can also be severe and life threatening and turns to be one of the most dangerous water-borne diseases. To prevent HAV, safe and effective vaccines are also available.
Hepatitis E Virus (HEV)
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is most often transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food or water. HEV is a common cause of hepatitis that outbursts in developing parts of the world. It is increasingly acknowledged as an important cause of hepatitis. Safe and effective vaccines have been developed but are not easily available to prevent HEV infection.
In order to get rid of these deadly diseases and stay safe and healthy, it is recommended that you drink clean and pure water using water purifier at your home and office.
